Message From Kishi Toshiyuki

Abingdon Road message from Kishi Toshiyuki, programmer/keyboardist of abingdon boys school. If I can find time/energy/Japanese-side-of-the-brain enough, I’ll try and get at least a rough translation of this up for anyone interested. In the meantime, even without understanding anything he’s saying, it’s still awesome to finally hear the mysterious Kishi Toshiyuki talking.

Hitting the First Pain-Barrier of ’10…?

Today we are officially two weeks into the new year! How are everyone’s resolutions holding out?

Although I decided not to make “resolutions” this year, because I never seem to remember them past the first two days of the new year, I did make some decisions as to what was going to be different this year. I think I’ve been holding to them well so far…

Remember, it has been scientifically proven that it takes about 30 days for the human brain to fully reprogram itself, so if you started on the first, you’re probably hitting the major pain-barrier right now…I know I am! The other day I had my first moment of doubt, and thought I would sleep in a little. But I didn’t give in! I’ve been busy with some different things than usual for a few days, but now I’m fully ready to jump back in.

mou sukoshi ganbatte kudasai! (Please just keep it up a little longer!).  Here’s some motivation, presented by abingdon boys school in honor of their long-awaiting 2nd album’s release date being nearly here!: Freedom

Gloomy news is hittin’ the headlines
So depressin’, not a surprise
Public places, there are no boundaries
Supervised like we can’t be wise
Who’s in control of the disaster?
Who’s in control of your life?

Now it’s the time to break out of your cell
Unchain yourself, don’t hesitate
Pressures like these, unnecessary
You are here to emancipate
Just let go of what is inside you
Show what you got! Go ahead and do your thing!

I’m goin’ out there
I’m gonna meet you there
Stand up and get a kick out of life!
I wanna be free yeah!

I’m gettin’ up there
I’m gonna take you there
It’s the beginning of the renaissance
In the name of freedom!

Bumpin’ into gossips, they bore me
No interest to join the game
Suffocatin’, so ordinary
Every moment is not the same
Just let go of what is inside you
Show what you got! Go ahead and be yourself!

I'm going out there...

The Abingdon Road “Talking-To”

Yes. There are previously released songs on this album. Seven of them. Got a problem with that? Wanna take this outside?

Let’s talk about this. Sure, that’s 7 brand new songs we could have had– and everyone feels a bit of a sting at the thought of having lost seven new a.b.s songs– after all, we want as bloody much as we can get our lace-gloved hands on! Much as I respect you all, I must make this point: probably what you’re really upset about is the fact that you bought all the singles and now you feel like you’re getting ripped off.

Of course this isn’t the case. You wouldn’t be proper fans if you didn’t collect the very collectible limited and first-press editions (or any editions, for that matter) of all their singles. And then there’re the B-sides. Excellent songs unto themselves– Freedom, for one. So suck it up– a full length album full-stop is an incredible gift of music from the boys, not to be understated.

Oh– and if you have first-press limited editions with external bonuses that you’re such a punk you don’t want, there are a few I’m bummed to be missing, so we can take this to the other room and talk business.  +g

Tracklist released for a.b.s‘ much-anticipated (at least by me. Shaking in my boots here!) new full-length album, to hit shelves (or leave the warehouse, in the case of us foreigners) on January 27th, ’10. I’m pumped to see the track selection– all the new stuff has funky and promising titles, and all the old stuff were obvious picks (all the hits of the year). All I freakin’ wanna know is what the heck BLADE CHORD is doing on here. It has, in my personal experience and opinion, absolutely no business being on this album.

Limited edition includes bonus DVD featuring footage from their performance at “Inazuma Rock Fes” on September 19, 2009 in Shiga (prefecture near Kyoto). DVDs are region-2 encoded (Japan, Europe, and Middle East), and carry no subtitles.

D’espairsRay Until the End of Time

This time before and around New Year’s is usually a time of reflection and prepping of the never-seem-to-happen resolutions. Having just celebrated their tenth anniversary (yeah, 10, ten, tenth– you read it right), and this being a time of reflection, Jrockers, headbangers, and Keiists together ought to be contemplating what exactly D’espairsRay has done for the Visual music scene since 1999. Well…let me give you a hint: it has something to do with mutilating our eyes and ears with some killer Jrock. And I mean that in the best way possible.

The band may not look as terrifyingly hardcore as they did back in their beginning, but they’re still rocking out as heavy as ever…

…Not only that, but the band has been branching out a bit. Networking, as it were, among the high echelons of Jrock society. They collaborated by working with abingdon boys school‘s programmer and keyboardist, the sensational Toshiyuki Kishi by passing on the production of new single FINAL CALL to the master mixer. Good idea, that.

Drummer TSUKASA was also just honored by appearing in the PV of GACKT’s new masterpiece, poetic thrasher 雪月花~The End of Silence [Setsugekka~ The End of Silence], along with Gacktjob guitarist YOU, Nightmare‘s bassist Ni~ya, and Duel Jewel‘s guitarist Shun. Omedetou~~ Tsukasa.

Now you, too, can feel like you could live forever with hardcore Visualist authorities D’espairsRay and their brand new hot-off-the-press today (Dec. 29th) album IMMORTAL. Regular edition JPY 2800
Immortal / D'espairsRay

As for the first decade of killing it, (while somehow still managing to look as if they couldn’t even have been alive long enough to celebrate the tenth year of their anything, let alone the tenth year of their formation as a real-live-popular band.),the band celebrated with (select) fans at a free concert. The footage was filmed for the deprived/depraved, and is available for the price of a one-way ticket to Japan. Watch and weep:

“From Dusk Till Dawn”

…You would almost think the title of abingdon boys school‘s new single was referring to how much I listen to them. But actually, it’s not. The mastermind band has hit it once again with an ending for an anime series, this time Darker Than Black 2. The single, to be released December 16th (Hallelujah– still early enough to add it to your Christmas list) features only the title song, From Dusk Till Dawn, for JPY500.

arena37c_nov07_06

From Dusk Till Dawn is an almost shocking break in the heavy rock the band has been releasing lately (JAP, Kimi no Uta, STRENGTH…etc). A mellow swerve into melancholia, this may actually be the first legitimate ballad by our favorite school boys. If you’re looking for a late-night pleaser, pick up your copy today. Well, technically not till December. But pre-order now.

I don’t know about anybody else out there, but my piggy-bank has been so abused this year that it can practically file for harassment and get taken away by the government’s child-protection agencies and sent off to a foster-home. By my book, however, it would be worth going to court in order to have another gem added to the a.b.s. treasure-trove.

abingdon boys school to teach rock a lesson in London, 11/12

May it never be said that I am not devoted. When I discovered the horrifying information that abingdon boys school would be touring Europe this fall, I felt the keen twist of betrayal…that this incredible band would be performing in an English-speaking country and I would not be there to see it….It was bad enough missing GACKT’s Requiem et Reminiscence II in the spring, and then the Vrock Fest happening in October…one can only take so much torture before one breaks!

abs 005So I broke down and bought a ticket to see their live at The Underworld Camden in London. There is something somewhat unbelievable about the fact that it actually says it’s for an abs live. Not to mention the fact that I’m going. I know that I live in the US! I’ll swim if that’s what it takes.

The ticket came in the mail yesterday…I’m considering framing it until I leave (just kidding).
